Western New England College students from Engineering professor Eric Haffner's ILP 369 course. This course is intended for all majors. The course focuses on systematic approaches to problem solving through design. Design is the process to achieve a desired transformation from the current state to an improved state. Everyone does this whether it is a simple activity or finding the solution to a complex problem. Students will gain understanding of defining criteria and restrictions that influence designs and how designs influence culture and society.

'The Great Western Incursion' (Hall+Castle, 4965+5043) - Saturday 20.02.10

The first public GWR Railtour of the 175th Year, 2010, was given to two classic Great Western designs, Collett's 4-6-0 'Hall' and 'Castle' class locomotives, numbers 4965 'Rood Ashton Hall' and 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe', both owned by Vintage Trains and based at Tyseley Loco Works. 'The Great Western Incursion' took the route from Tyseley to Didcot via the Golden Valley Line and return, which includes some steep sections such as Stapperton Bank. I joined GJDobbzy, theonlyadsrulz and jakeyboygen for a day of chasing the tour early in the morning. We visited Ashchurch for Tewkesbury station and the approach to Sapperton Tunnel for the outward journey and Kemble station for the return. During the layover we visited the STEAM museum in Swindon. The picture at the start of this video was taken at the museum and is of the first 'Castle' to be built, number 4073 'Caerphilly Castle'.

The customary three-day autumn event was held on September 4th 5th & 6th. The impressive eight-locomotive line up included three Great Western designs:- 4-4-0 3440 City of Truro, GWR 'Prairie' 55xx 2-6-2T 5521 and GWR 56xx 0-6-2T 6619. Visiting from the Great Central Railway was the Gresley society's newly-restored GNR N2 0-6-2T 1744, which complimented the M&GN Society's immaculately restored Quad-Art set beautifully. From the home-based fleet we see J15 0-6-0 65462, N7 0-6-2T 69621 and 0-6-0ST 1982 Ring Haw. Finally this years gala saw the long awaited return of the goods train. Sulzer Type 2 (24081) visiting from the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is seen in this clip working the goods.

Bridge Details dig to 8 meters joint location from left to right (X,Y) (2,2.5) (6,5) (10,6.25) (14,7) (18,6.25) (22,5) (26,2.5) outer arch- hollow tube at 190mm carbon steel bottom(members by street)- solid bar at 50mm quenched&tempered steel members inside arch numbered from left to right (1-12) member numbers 1,3,6,7,10,12 all are solid bars quenched tempered steel at 30mm members 2,4,5,8,9 ,11 all are hollow tubes carbon steel at 100mm if that was confusing see the vid the members that look like strings are the bars and the ones that dont are tubes Notes: Arches will most always be stronger than something that's box like shaped. For compression (parts that go red) hollow tubes will always be stonger For tension (parts that go blue) solid tubes will always be stronger If said part has compression and tension, check the details given to see which has a higher force compression or tension to decide if it should be hollow or solid. Also similar sized parts will be cheaper than parts that are all different sizes. Take note at how most of my parts are the same size even though they could be smaller. Michael Jackson," is now open to the public. Made possible by the generosity of Michael Jackson's long-time Costumer Designers, Dennis Tompkins & Michael Bush, the display pays tribute to Michael Jackson's incredible showmanship, on and off the stage... His wardrobe was always memorable and detailed, in large part due to the incredible talent and creativity of Dennis Tompkins & Michael Bush. It is in these details that the recurring western influences are found and highlighted in this one-of-a-kind exhibit. From Jackson's Old West performance of 'I Shot the Sheriff' on the family's 1970's variety show to the flocked, bib-front shirt he wore in Sydney, Australia in the 1990's, the exhibit shows the western influences that were evident in his iconic wardrobe over the years, blending seamlessly with the Gene Autry, John Wayne, Bill Pickett, Roy Rogers and Buffalo Bill artifacts throughout the Museum's gallery of the American West. Form Function - 3 Design Projects

This a sample of 3 projects from Form Function, by Jason Morris and Western Industrial Design students. This purely visual short film shows an industrial design creative process that starts with abstract sculpture and ends with a functional object. Music by Moby. It premiered at The Doctober Documentary Film Festival 2009, Pickford Cinema, Bellingham, WA, US. Creative solutions are rarely found by using conventional methods. This short film shows a design process that begins with abstract form creation without knowledge of the designs purpose. The form creation is done with guidelines made by the instructor, who creates the rules to correspond with the designs objectives. Only after these abstract sculptures are complete is the designs purpose revealed. A selected form study is then evaluated for ideas and inspiration, which is refined applying the realities of the design functions. This film shows the sculpture spinning slowly and transforming from form to functional design. Twelve selected projects are exhibited from the industrial design students at Western Washington University from January to March 2009.
